Your Gift Is Making Room For You
Have you been enjoying our morning prayer series on the life of David? I don’t know about you, but I love the story of David. There is so much wisdom we can glean from his life, from his journey as a humble shepherd boy to becoming the king of Israel. Not only are his integrity and faith in God inspiring, but he authored almost half of the Book of Psalms, including one of the most beloved passages of Scripture, Psalm 23.
We all can relate to the Psalms, the prayers, the struggles, and the victories David expressed as he encountered and overcame challenges. David wasn’t perfect, but he was a man after God’s own heart, and that is what I love about him.
Stay Faithful
God isn’t looking for perfect people. He isn’t concerned about your past. He isn’t concerned about your age. David was just a youth when the prophet, Samuel, anointed him as the next king of Israel. God isn’t even concerned about your abilities. He just wants your availability. He wants your obedience to his will, your faithfulness.
King Saul was persistently disobedient, and because he walked away from God, the Bible says the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and an evil spirit troubled him (1 Samuel 16:15). So, Saul’s servants suggested that they find a musician to play the harp for him so he could be well. Saul agreed, and one of his servants said, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, that is cunning in playing, and a mighty valiant man, and a man of war, and prudent in matters, and a comely person, and the Lord is with him” (1 Samuel 16:18 KJV).
David was a young shepherd boy on the back side of the desert, just playing his harp and singing songs to God like, “The Lord is my shepherd”. And someone was taking note of him. David didn’t even know that word was getting out there about how God was working in his life. When God gives you a gift, word will get out about it. You don’t have to convince people about it. Whether they admit it or not, they know if God’s hand, his anointing, is on you.
Invest In Your Gift
Your gift will make room for you, that thing that God has anointed you to do. It comes natural to you because it’s a gift. You didn’t do anything to earn it. You just got it because it’s a gift. Now just because you have a gift doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t invest in it. Remember the parable of the talents? The lord of the servants rewarded those who invested their talents. “Well done, good and faithful servant,” he said, “You were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord” (Matthew 25:21 NKJV).
Notice David was faithful with his gifts and responsibilities. King Saul’s servant said he was cunning in playing. The word cunning in this verse means skillful. Not only did the servant say he was cunning in playing, but he also said that David was a mighty and valiant man, a man of war. David hadn’t fought Goliath yet, but he faithfully watched his father’s sheep, even killing a lion and a bear to protect his flock, and word got out about it.
Word is getting out about you. Keep staying faithful. Keep your heart pure. Keep your motives pure. Stay humble before God. The Bible says humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, and he will exalt you in due time (1 Peter 5:6).
The Lord Is With You
“The Lord is with him,” Saul’s servant said about David. That is what makes all the difference. You can have all the talent in the world, but if you don’t have God, you have nothing. “Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse, and said, ‘Send me your son David, who is with the sheep’” (1 Samuel 16:19). Saul knew exactly where to find David because David was committed. He was faithful watching his father’s sheep. Accountability will get you far.
“So David came to Saul and stood before him. And he loved him greatly, and he became his armorbearer” (1 Samuel 16:21). Your gift is making room for you. The Bible says, “A man’s gift makes room for him, and brings him before great men” (Proverbs 18:16). “Do you see a man who excels in his work? He will stand before kings; He will not stand before unknown men” (Proverbs 22:29).
As we use our gifts and talents to serve God, let us remember David’s example—stay faithful, prioritize our relationship with God, and trust that our gift will make room for us in God’s perfect timing. When we make ourselves available to God, he will work mightily through us, just as he did in David’s life. May we be a people after God’s heart.
