Help Is On the Way

Sometimes we can be doing everything we are supposed to – praying, reading God’s Word, obeying the Scriptures, tithing – and still encounter intense storms. The disciples found themselves in such a situation in Matthew 14.

GET ALONE WITH GOD

Jesus had just finished multiplying five loaves and two fish and feeding a crowd of about 20,000. The people were not as excited about the power of God as the fact that their stomachs were filled, and they were ready to force Jesus to be their king.

Jesus’ disciples began to get caught up in the drama, so he had to separate them from the crowd. “And straightway Jesus constrained his disciples to get into a ship, and to go before him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away” (Matthew 14:22 KJV).

After Jesus sent the multitudes away, “he went up into a mountain apart to pray” (Matthew 14:23). If God has been removing certain people from around you, the next step in your life is elevation. Get alone with God because he is getting ready to take you higher. He is about to do something in your life that he has never done before.

YOU ARE HALFWAY THERE

So, Jesus got alone with God (Matthew 14:23). In the meantime, his disciples were caught in a storm. And “the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary” (Matthew 14:24).

The disciples were midway to their destination when suddenly the waves began to rage, and the winds began to blow. But these disciples were not in the ship on their own accord. Jesus had told them to go before him to the other side. And right when you are halfway to obeying God, all hell will break loose in your life.

The enemy may be intensifying his attacks against you right now, but keep rowing. You are going over to the other side. Jesus told his disciples to go over to the other side, and when you obey God’s word, no weapon formed against you will prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Just the mere fact that all hell is breaking loose is a sign that the devil himself is convinced that you are going to make it.

YOUR STORM IS UNDER HIS FEET

So, the disciples were caught in the middle of a storm when suddenly they saw something or someone walking towards them. “And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea” (Matthew 14:25). But the disciples were terrified. They thought they were seeing a ghost. Isn’t that just like us Christians? We cry out for deliverance, and when God sends us help, we are nervous because the answer did not come the way we expected.

But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid” (Matthew 14:27). Be encouraged. Help is on the way! This storm cannot take you out. Your storm is under his feet.

“And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water” (Matthew 14:28). If that was me, I would have asked Jesus to calm the storm first. But Peter got revelation in that moment. He realized that he too could walk on top his storm.

And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus” (Matthew 14:29). One word from God empowered Peter to dominate his storm. All you need is one word from God! This storm is not going to take you out. Jesus is headed to your ship, and he is giving you the power to tread on serpents and scorpions and over all the power of the enemy (Luke 10:19). You are going to make it to the other side. Help is on the way!
