You Need Good Friends
You need good, healthy relationships in your life. No one man is an island. Even Jesus had good friends. He loved Lazarus, Martha, and Mary. He loved his disciples. Everyone needs somebody they can trust and depend on.
Divine Connections
In 1 Samuel 18, we see the importance of friendship in David’s life. When David conquered Goliath, he was taken to King Saul. Saul kept David with him and wouldn’t let him return home (1 Samuel 18:2). “After David had finished talking with Saul, he met Jonathan, the king’s son. There was an immediate bond between them, for Jonathan loved David” (1 Samuel 18:1).
Have you ever met someone like that? There was an immediate connection. You didn’t try to force the relationship. Every time you try to make things happen in your own strength, the situation normally goes south. But there is something about when the Holy Spirit brings people into your life. There is a genuine bond. The Apostle Paul talks about this connection in Ephesians, “Endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace” (Ephesians 4:3 KJV). There is a oneness of heart and mind that only God can produce.
God brought David and Jonathan together for a powerful purpose. David had just finished defeating the giant, Goliath, but he still needed people in his life who God could work through to help him.
Kingdom Protocol
“And Jonathan made a solemn pact with David, because he loved him as he loved himself” (1 Samuel 18:3 NLT). This friendship with Jonathan was crucial because David didn’t know anything about life in the palace. He was raised on the backside of the desert. Taking care of his father’s sheep and playing his harp were all he knew. But now that he was in the palace, he had to learn kingdom protocol. And who better to teach David than the king’s son, Jonathan himself?
God will place certain people in your life to prepare you for where he is taking you, to help you grow. You can’t carry yourself like you’re still on the backside of the desert. When God brings you into a new season, you have to adapt. I didn’t say you have to lower your standards. But as far as etiquette and certain behavioral qualities are concerned, you have to adjust. If you weren’t punctual or accountable in the last season, that will not work in the palace.
The saints of old used to say your gift may take you there, but wisdom will keep you there. Sometimes, people collapse because their gift takes them into arenas where their wisdom is not prepared to keep them there. When God brings you into a new season, you have to be willing to learn a different way of doing things. God knows exactly what he is doing.
God Has a Plan
David had to learn a whole new way of life. He wasn’t among the sheep anymore. He was among dignitaries and military generals, and God strategically placed Jonathan in David’s life to help him adapt to a higher quality of living. David learned from Jonathan, and as he continued to apply the wisdom he gained and allowed his gift to make room for him, he experienced promotion.
“Whatever Saul asked David to do, David did it successfully. So Saul made him a commander over the men of war, an appointment that was welcomed by the people and Saul’s officers alike” (1 Samuel 18:5).
Not only did Jonathan teach David about the ways of the palace, but later he helped warn David about King Saul’s plot to kill him. And when David was discouraged running from Saul and hiding in the wilderness, Jonathan visited him and encouraged him in his faith.
You need good friends. God brings certain people into your life to not only provide companionship but equip you for your destiny, to help teach you, refine you, and encourage you when you need it most. Don’t try to do life alone. We all need people who got our backs, so thank God for the friends he places in your life. Treasure them, learn from them, and realize that God orchestrates certain connections to serve his greater purpose.
