The Making of a Champion
God can give you one breakthrough, one divine moment that will transform your life and shake history for the glory of God. You don’t need a thousand miracles. You just need one God encounter. When David killed Goliath, he never went back to the sheepfolds. That one victory confirmed his calling, that he was God’s anointed, the one the Lord chose to be king over Israel in place of Saul.
NEW LEVELS, NEW DEVILS
After David defeated the giant, King Saul didn’t allow him to return home, and he made him one of his commanders. David won many victories, and the women of Israel began to sing, “Saul has killed his thousands, and David his ten thousands.” Saul became jealous of David after this, and he began to eye him. Even after David married his daughter, Saul tried to kill him. Twice he threw his javelin at David, trying to pin him to the wall, but David escaped.
So, David fled from Saul. Saul knew that God told him he would take the kingdom from him and give it to another who was better than him because of Saul’s persistent disobedience. Disobedience will cost you. You have to come to a place where you are willing to obey God no matter how crazy it seems.
ROAD TO PROMOTION
So, all these events began to shape David into the person God ordained him to be. And in 1 Samuel 22, he hid in the cave of Adullam. Think about this. The mighty David, the one who killed a lion and a bear, the one who slew the giant, Goliath, was on the run for his life. Why? God will allow you to be tried before he can trust you with promotion. Do you want God to use you? You must be willing to go through the fire.
And the Bible says, “My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing” (James 1:2-4 KJV).
BREAKTHROUGH ANOINTING
While David was in the cave, his family gathered to him for protection because Saul was on a rampage. “And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him; and he became a captain over them: and there were with him about four hundred men” (1 Samuel 22:2).
These men looked like they had nothing to offer. They were going nowhere. They felt like their lives had no purpose, but they joined forces with David. And the anointing on David’s life began to rub off on those men. If the anointing on your life does not work in a cave, it will not work in the palace. God will allow you to be in the most adverse circumstances and places, so you can learn to trust him, so you can understand that no matter what situation you find yourself in, God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that you can ask or think (Ephesians 3:20).
So, the anointing on David began to affect the lives of the men around him, and they became David’s mighty men, fearsome warriors who won outstanding victories. When they first came to David, they were nobodies, but these men broke through. As God raised David up and promoted him as king over Israel, everyone connected to him succeeded. And these same men who were broke, busted, and disgusted, were later able to fund the building of Solomon’s Temple. They gave tons of gold, silver, bronze, and iron, worth millions. Who you connect yourself to matters. The people you connect to will either take you down or up, so join up with those who are full of the Holy Spirit and the anointing.
ANOINTED TO WIN
God has anointed you to win. It does not matter what the enemy throws at you. The weapon may be formed against you, but it will not prosper (Isaiah 54:17). You may be in a cave of Adullam now, but God has destined you to reign. Stay faithful. No matter what season you are in, walk with integrity and in obedience to God’s instructions. Continue to trust God, even in the trials. Surround yourself with the right people, and humble yourself, and in due season, God will exalt you (1 Peter 5:6).
