The small thing YOU keep excusing is not staying small.

There is something YOU have made peace with. A habit, an attitude, a compromise, a pattern YOU tell yourself is not a big deal. YOU excuse it. YOU explain it away. YOU promise yourself YOU will deal with it later. But 2 Corinthians 13 carries a challenge most people avoid, because it turns the spotlight around — off of everyone else and onto YOU. And it reveals why the thing YOU keep excusing today is quietly getting stronger.

This passage does something rare: it tells YOU to examine yourself.

Not to examine everyone around YOU. Not to measure other people's faults. To look inward, honestly, and test whether what YOU claim to believe is actually genuine in YOUR own life. It is one of the most direct calls to self-examination in all of Scripture — and most people skip right past it, because it is far easier to inspect others than to turn the light on ourselves.

Here is what most people miss.

Whatever YOU tolerate does not stay the same size. What YOU excuse today gets a little more comfortable tomorrow, a little more familiar the day after, until the thing YOU once knew was wrong becomes simply normal — woven so deeply into YOUR life that YOU stop noticing it at all. The danger was never that YOU would suddenly fall. The danger is the slow drift YOU permit one excuse at a time, until what should have been dealt with has become a stronghold.

But here is what makes this challenge an act of love, not condemnation.

The whole reason for the examination is not to tear YOU down. There is a specific purpose stated at the end of this passage — a reason the hard mirror is held up at all — and it changes everything about how YOU should receive it. This is not about shame. It is about catching the thing early, while it is still small enough to deal with, before it becomes the normal YOU can no longer see.

There is something in the test this passage gives — the honest question it asks YOU to sit with — that will show YOU exactly what YOU have been excusing, and give YOU the chance to deal with it now instead of later.
